Port Antonio is situated on the northeastern end of Jamaica with two of the finest harbors on the island. The West Harbor Waterfront Development project is in fact “an out growth (20 years on) of the Planning study I did for this beautiful but underdeveloped seaside town. The work included research into marinas, boat yards and Police Stations and the design of a Marina Building, a Public Park and Promenade, a Police Station and Dock, a boatyard with repair facilities and offices and many other ancillary buildings”.

Client’s Brief:
To develop a Marina with interrelated projects, this included:

• The upgrading of an existing Cruise Ship Facility, adding extensive landscaping, catering and beach facilities.
• A new Mega Yacht Club House and Marina designed and built to the highest international standards.
• A harborside promenade and park to reclaim the seafront.
• A new Marine Police and Coast Guard Facility.
• A new Boatyard Facility for dry docking, storage and repair.
• Recreational opportunities for townspeople and visitors.
• All to stimulate and attract development to the town.

Design Solutions:

• Opening the town to the harbor by providing a park, promenade and sea-side activities.
• Using Architecture that fits seamlessly into the townscape, reflecting the scale and appearance of the best of Port Antonio and Caribbean design.
• Providing a new landscaped pedestrian way with seating and other amenities, extending from the beach at the Cruise Ship Pier along the harborfront, through the mangroves and over a footbridge at the Annotto River, to the Sir Henry Morgan Marina.
• Enhancing security by extensive street lighting and the presence of a Marine Police post, police residence and dock along the promenade. The Police facility is similar in design and scale to the town and the new development.
